The Moroccan Hammam Ritual

A centuries-old ritual of purification

Rooted in the bathhouses of Marrakech and Fez, the Moroccan hammam is a communal ritual of heat, water, and touch. Warm steam opens the skin, black soap softens and prepares, and the kessala's vigorous exfoliation renews the body from head to toe.

Ghassoul clay drawn from the Atlas Mountains draws out impurities, while a final rinse and Argan oil leave the skin luminous and deeply nourished. More than cleansing, it is a slowing down — a return to the body and to stillness.

The Traditional 5-Step Ritual

The experience lasts about 60–120 minutes and follows a specific sequence of heat, exfoliation, and nourishment.

  1. 01

    Steaming

    You begin in a warm, moist room for 10–15 minutes to open the pores and soften the skin.

  2. 02

    Black Soap

    Traditional Savon Beldi, a gel-like black soap of olive oil and macerated olives, is applied all over the body.

  3. 03

    Exfoliation

    After a quick rinse, the kessala uses a coarse Kessa glove to vigorously scrub away layers of dead skin.

  4. 04

    Ghassoul Clay

    A mineral-rich clay mask mixed with rose water is applied to body and face for deep detoxification.

  5. 05

    Argan Finish

    A final rinse and an application of Argan oil seals in moisture and leaves the skin glowing.
